About Keidanren Committee on Nature Conservation

KCNC was established in 1992, in the same year as United Nations Conference on Environment and Development at Rio de Janeiro was held.
Since its establishment, 32 million US dollars have been granted to approximately 1,000 projects through KNCF (Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund). KNCF/KCNC supports a wide range of projects mainly on biodiversity conservation including natural resources management and rare species conservation and others such as plantation or environmental education.

KCNC took the leading role in drafting "Declaration of Keidanren on Nature Conservation" announced in 2003 and “Declaration of Biodiversity by Keidanren” established in 2009. In 2010, during the CBD COP10* period, KCNC launched “Japan Business and Biodiversity Partnership.” Through the partnership, on behalf of Japan’s business sector, KCNC has been promoting the awareness on biodiversity conservation, communicating guidelines on conservation efforts, and sharing relevant case studies and experiences.

KNCF/KCNC organizes and holds “NGO project report meetings” and “Business - NGO exchange meetings” to offer a platform for direct conversation which contribute to improve the partnership between them. In addition, through the “Japan Business and Biodiversity Partnership” KNCF/KCNC pursues close relationships with domestic and overseas governmental bodies and other organizations aiming to achieve the Aichi Targets in collaboration with them.

Each year, the mission headed by the KCNC chairman visits project sites in overseas to confirm the progress of KNCF-supported projects and to constantly improve the program. The mission contacts local NGOs and communities as well as local leading figures to promote the understanding and implementation of nature conservation activities. As for domestic projects, representatives from the KCNC membership visit their sites to exchange opinions with respective NGOs.
